Moses recorded this as one of the Ten Commandments, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7). A few weeks ago, I came across this wonderful story of a mother’s love and commitment.
“When Sumner Spence expressed his desire to attend college, many people scoffed because he suffers from cerebral palsy. Sumner can’t read books because his eyes won’t focus. He can’t hold onto things very well because his hands clench uncontrollably. Taking notes in a classroom would be out of the question. Anyone who knew Sumner would have thought it perfectly understandable if he had never set a goal beyond learning how to operate his wheelchair. But that wasn’t good enough for Sumner. And it certainly wasn’t good enough for his mother, Susan Spence.

Are We Possessed By The Truth?

The New Testament letter known as 1 John addresses a church that has gone through some troubling times. Some within that body of believers were claiming to “know” God better than anyone else … to have a grip on the truth more accurately than anyone else … and to walk with God closer than anyone else. It was evidenced in a spiritual snobbery … an elitist attitude … that disappointed the man (John) who had served as a spiritual father and pastor to these people for so many years.
